Does Langkawi Have Crocodiles

Does Langkawi Have Crocodiles? What I Discovered on the Island

When I was initially planning my Langkawi trip, one question kept nagging my brain: Do crocodiles really live here? I know this sounds dramatic, but if you’re thinking of trekking through mangrove swamps, going on a river cruise, or exploring the more remote areas of the island, this is a pertinent question.

Having spent time on this incredible Malaysian archipelago and doing my homework before and during my visit, I’m more than happy to give you the lowdown on the question of the day: Does Langkawi have crocodiles?

Short answer: Yes, Langkawi has crocodiles!

Langkawi Island is inhabited by crocodiles. The mangrove swamp areas, rivers, and brackish water provide the ideal habitats for the estuarine or saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus). They’re the largest reptiles on the planet, and they’re found all over the coastal regions of Malaysia, which include Langkawi Island.

But to the average tourist, the chances of seeing one of these incredible creatures are low. You’re not likely to spot one while sipping your beer on Cenang Beach. But if you’re trekking through the mangrove forests of Langkawi, especially around the Kilim Karst Geoforest Park, the chances of seeing a crocodile increase significantly.

You can however observe these majestic creatures from the safe place called Crocodile Adventureland. Find out more on one of these Langkawi attractions on my other post!

Where to spot the crocodiles of Langkawi Island

During my boat cruise around the Kilim Geoforest Park, I asked the tour guide if there were sightings of crocodiles, and the answer was like they were an everyday occurrence.

Where to spot the crocodiles of Langkawi Island:

  • – Kilim River, which has the highest recorded sightings of crocodiles according to tour guides and wildlife experts
  • – Areas around Kisap and Ayer Hangat, which are less populated and have more mangrove cover
  • – The eastern coastal areas of Langkawi Island, where freshwater rivers meet the sea
  • – The more remote beaches of Langkawi Island, which have less or no human settlement

Saltwater crocodiles live in both freshwater and saltwater habitats, so the entire Langkawi waterways system could be considered their territory.

What Crocodiles Live in Langkawi and What to Expect

What Crocodiles Live in Langkawi and What to Expect

If you are wandering around Langkawi, the type of crocodile you will likely hear people talk about is the saltwater crocodile, or Crocodylus porosus. These are not exclusive to Langkawi and can be found in parts of Southeast Asia, Northern Australia, and the Indian subcontinent. These are the big guys, reaching 5 to 6 meters in length and weighing well over a ton.

The wildlife authority in Malaysia, PERHILITAN, has noted that the Estuarine Crocodiles have been spotted along the Malaysian coast. While no figures are known on the population of these creatures on Langkawi Island, conservationists and tour guides alike have noted that these creatures do live in the island’s mangroves.

The saltwater crocodile is said to be a solitary creature and tends to avoid humans at all costs. While this is true, the chances are always present, especially in areas around their nests and food sources.

My Kilim River Mangrove Tour: No Crocs to Be Seen, but Definitely the Feeling of Crocodile Territory

While on the Kilim River Mangrove Tour, no crocodiles were spotted during the tour. However, the feeling was quite strong that this was the saltwater crocodile’s own territory.

The tour guide told us that two weeks prior to our tour, someone had spotted a crocodile along the riverbank, and another group, a family, had spotted a large one in the area of the fishing area in the nearby village.

The tour guide was not trying to frighten us, but rather to let us in on the reality of the area we had chosen to visit.

The thing that really caught my eye is the fact that this area is not overrun with tourists. It is like this area has never been touched, unlike the other islands in the area. It is like the ancient trees and wildlife have never known the existence of humans going about their daily business as if we were not even there.

This is the world that the saltwater crocodile lives in—not in some artificial environment set up to attract tourists but in the raw natural world.

Worried about Crocodiles in Langkawi? Here’s the Reality

You might see them, but the chances for a tourist are very low.

So go ahead and dip your feet in the waters at the popular tourist beaches in the west of Langkawi like Pantai Cenang and Tengah Beach. These beaches attract the crowds, and the chances of spotting a Croc here are very low.

Simple Dos and Don’ts to Keep in Mind

  • Don’t swim in rivers, mangroves, and estuaries.
  • Don’t ignore your mangrove guide.
  • Don’t stand at the water’s edge.
  • Don’t fish in rivers without permission.
  • Don’t ignore warning signs and notices.

According to the Malaysian Government and LADA: “The area around the tourist beaches is safe.”

Crocodiles and Langkawi: A Conversation Tale

Crocodiles are the indicators of the health of the ecosystem in Langkawi. Langkawi has been designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark since 2007. The designation has been upgraded over the years. Saltwater Crocodiles rule the food chain and act as the indicator species for the health of the mangroves. The presence of Crocs in the waters of Langkawi indicates healthy and pristine waters.

Protecting the Crocodiles means protecting the whole ecosystem – the mangroves, the forests, and all the species inhabiting this place.

What the Locals Say

While on the island, I decided to ask a few locals in the area near the Kilim area about the presence of crocodiles. From what the fisherman I talked to has seen “many times” while fishing in the area, the locals have no problem coexisting with the crocodiles.

“We know they’re there. We don’t go looking for trouble, and they don’t go looking for us.”

This is a lesson that visitors can learn from the locals. It seems that the crocodiles in the area are not as aggressive as they seem. After all, they are wild animals. It is best to coexist peacefully.

Visiting Langkawi Safely and Confidently

Now that we know that there are crocodiles in the area, it should not stop us from having fun in the upcoming days in the island. In fact, the presence of the wild creatures adds a bit more character to the otherwise tourist-y islands.

All it takes is to stay in the designated areas when swimming, to choose the right tour in the mangrove area, and to listen to the locals. Langkawi is teeming with natural wonders such as the karst, the beaches, and the rainforests.

After learning more about the wild character of the island, I decided to leave the island feeling that it is teeming with energy, the energy that comes from the wild crocodiles that have inhabited the area long before the resorts were built, and the energy that comes from the adventure that awaits all visitors to the island.

Yes, it is true that there are crocodiles in Langkawi. In fact, there are a number of saltwater estuarine crocodiles living in the waters surrounding Langkawi Island, especially in the vicinity of the Kilim Geoforest Park.

If you’re an adventurous person, it wouldn’t hurt if you’re made aware of the presence of crocodiles in the waters of Langkawi if you plan on paddling or swimming in the island’s waters. Of course, if you’re an average person who just wants to chill on the beach, the chances of encountering a crocodile in the waters of Langkawi are quite remote.
